Enlgish as second language by Rafia - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

One day we got a visa to the United States. I was really sad but when my dad told me that girls can get education there,I was really happy for that because I always wanted to get educated and become a doctor in the future.When I got enrolled in school after 1 month, I couldn't believe it and never felt that it was real but then I realized that it was real.

I faced a challenging academic experience,when I came to the USA from Afghanistan which is my country that I was born in. It was that I didn't speak enough the language english. The only word I knew was "Hi." I was frustrated but determined to learn as soon as I could. If I did not try to learn English that it would be tough for me to communicate with other students who are in my class with me together. How I overcame this challenging academic experience was when I began watching cartoons in English, speaking with my classmates, and reading books. Slowly, after a year of hard work, I had learned enough English to feel more comfortable and communicate.

Looking back, I realized how important it was to learn the language. It wasn't easy at first, and there were many struggles, but I understood that learning English was essential for adapting to my new life. I learned that even the toughest challenges can be overcome with effort.
