Leadership Skills Do Not Effect College Success by Rebecca - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

No, I believe leadership skills are not necessarily essential for college success. Although beneficial, a student who would rather keep to themselves can achieve just as much as a student who knows how to take the lead. It can be argued that a student who is not a leader can in fact achieve more during their college education. A student who isolates themselves from others and focuses in on their education may accomplish more. However, when required, the student must be able to be sociable and make important connections in the network of their chosen field. Yet, this does not pertain to college success and therefore, I feel leadership skills may only be required after graduation.

As a person who does not have superb leadership skills, I take the perspective of one who has determined how to be successful in my endeavors without the need for others. I feel much more can be achieved and grasped through personal experience rather than with a group of people. Although I am very open to the opinions and inputs of others, I prefer to learn through experience, with the guidance of an expert. I feel that through a profound college education, one will slowly begin to obtain leadership skills along with a detailed understanding of their field. A person can only become a leader once they have gained a reasonable amount of knowledge in their field.

Since a student who is not a leader can easily achieve a successful college education, I believe those skills are irrelevant. However once that student graduates, leadership skills will become very important in helping to secure his or her career. In my opinion, the student must be a leader to themselves above all. Being a leader to others does not matter as much as propelling yourself forwards does. The student must keep in mind their own goals and aspirations, to someday become a leader in the field their selected major applies to. Although being a leader to others may not apply as much in college, the influence and impact you will one day establish will inspire others around the world and will therefore, advance civilization.
