Becoming a Leader by Rosemary - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leadership skills are not only important, but imperative to being successful in college. Although in High School one may be able to ride along on the coat tails of their friends or peers, in college that just won't suffice. You need to be willing to make the most of your time in college and to do that you need to step up and take charge of your education.

Although throughout grade school, and even high school courses are regulated and curriculum is standardized. This makes it easier to pay less attention in class, or not do work and slack off. In college though, your work ethic really reflects your grade and if you want good grades then you have to work for them and earn them. You have to be willing to lead yourself and give that extra push to do well. By doing your own work you can also influence others. You can lead by example and help your friends to work hard too.

You can lead others in different ways as well. You can set up clubs or organizations, become a tutor, share advice, or just be there to help your friends on work. Although it may seem like you're just helping your friends, you'd be surprised by how much this can benefit both of you. While you're giving advice, or helping someone study, you're going over the work too and reviewing for yourself. And by setting up or joining clubs you can meet new friends and ensure you'll have someone to call on if the time comes.

Being a leader in college allows you to get your own good grades and can even help improve the grades of your peers. It also helps you gain a network of friends and peers so you can help each other. And, as an added bonus, professors and administrators often notice those with skills like these and may offer out other opportunities to you. Hey, you never know.
