Calculus by Ryan - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
I sat down on my first day of Calculus my junior year of high school. As someone who is not the best with numbers I knew this class would be a challenge. To the right of me was my twin brother who was a math olympian champion and was very proficient in math. To the left was one of the smartest kids in my school. In simpler terms, I was overwhelmed. The smartest people I knew were in the same class as me , someone who has struggled in math their whole life and had just struggled to do good in the math previous. I knew that I had to put in the work to pass the class but little did I know I had the ability to be one of the top students in the class. Every day I studied the material that we learned in class and did my best to actually understand it. Instead of just going through the motions and trying to learn how to do the math, I tried to understand how it actually worked so I gained a deeper knowledge and ability to remember how to do problems on the tests. The results test after test kept coming in and I did very well on each one. Then the final came and I needed an A on it to keep my A in the class. I studied very well and did achieve the A which I was very happy about. I went on to take Calculus BC my senior year and did well in that as well. I am also a Finance major at SDSU which involves lots of math and numbers. If I did not step up to the plate and try my best at Calculus I would not be where I am today which is why I am very happy that I overcame the challenge of not being good with numbers or being good at math.
