Encouragement from a Teacher by Sage - January 2025 Scholarship Essay

Over my years of schooling, reading has always been something I couldn’t enjoy until my eighth-grade year. I had this new english teacher, we had her for two class periods then. Like many of my teachers now, she wanted us to spend ten minutes a day just simply reading. It just had to be a book, not a comic book or anything similar. As in many of my other classes, the teachers had their own libraries. And the first book I saw was the one I decided to start reading for ten minutes every day.
The novel that I had been drawn to was a romance novel called Anxious Hearts by Tucker Shaw. I simply chose it because of the cover which has a women's face on it. This teacher who had wanted to use students to read for ten minutes a day had changed my whole creative world, after being drawn to this book and reading it in just a few days. She gave me the ability to enjoy wanting to expand my views of learning. I have over the years read many books, from a wide range of genres. But the idea that just reading every day for ten minutes caused me to form the want to read.
