My first semester at Suffolk University was an exciting time, but it also presented me with one of the most challenging academic experiences I have faced. As a Political Science major, I was eager to dive into my courses and learn more about the governmental systems that shape our world. However, I quickly realized that the transition from high school to college-level coursework was not as smooth as I had anticipated.

One of the most difficult classes I enrolled in was an introductory course on political theory. The syllabus was filled with dense readings from philosophers like Plato, Hobbes, and Rousseau. I found myself struggling to keep up with the complex ideas and the fast-paced discussions in class. The first few weeks were overwhelming, and I began to doubt my ability to succeed in my chosen major.

The turning point came after I received my first paper back. I had spent hours researching and writing, but the grade was lower than I had hoped. My professor's comments were constructive but pointed out that I needed to develop a stronger argument and engage more deeply with the texts. I felt discouraged, but I knew I had to find a way to improve.

To overcome this challenge, I decided to change my approach to studying. First, I sought help from my professor during office hours. These sessions were incredibly helpful. My professor took the time to explain the concepts I was struggling with and offered guidance on how to approach the readings. This one-on-one attention gave me a clearer understanding of the material and boosted my confidence.

Additionally, I joined a study group with some classmates. We met regularly to discuss the readings and share our interpretations. This collaborative learning environment allowed me to hear different perspectives and clarify my own thoughts. It also provided a supportive community where we could encourage each other and share study tips.

I also made use of the university's writing center. The tutors there helped me refine my writing skills, which was crucial for articulating my ideas clearly and persuasively in essays. They taught me how to structure my arguments more effectively and how to critically analyze the texts we were studying.

Another strategy I adopted was to create a study schedule that broke down the readings into manageable sections. Instead of trying to tackle everything at once, I dedicated specific times each day to focus on different parts of the coursework. This consistent routine helped me stay on top of the material and reduced the stress of last-minute cramming.

Through these efforts, I gradually became more comfortable with the course content. My grades improved, and I started to enjoy the challenge of engaging with political theory. By the end of the semester, I had not only passed the class but had developed a genuine interest in the subject matter.

Reflecting on this experience, I realized that overcoming academic challenges requires perseverance and a willingness to seek help. It taught me the importance of utilizing available resources and collaborating with others to enhance my learning. This experience also reinforced my passion for Political Science and my determination to succeed in this field.

As a Hispanic woman and a first-generation college student, I am proud of what I have accomplished so far. This journey has not been easy, but it has shaped me into a more resilient and resourceful student. I am committed to continuing my education and contributing to my community by advocating for policies that promote equality and justice.

Winning this scholarship would greatly assist me in achieving my academic and career goals. It would alleviate some of the financial burdens of college, allowing me to focus more on my studies and extracurricular activities. I am eager to continue developing my skills and knowledge, and I am confident that with determination and support, I can overcome any academic challenges that come my way.
