My Community by Shakila - December 2013 Scholarship Essay
I consider BuildOn my community. BuildOn is an organization that focuses on volunteer work. With my community, I have been able to do many tremendous things, such as going to Haiti to build a school. I have been in the BuildOn community for over two years and am now the president of the BuildOn chapter at my school.
BuildOn is composed of diverse teenagers and young adults from different states. We focus on bettering our communities and neighborhoods with a range of volunteer services such as cleaning, recycling, serving food, etc. We also build schools in developing countries and send our students to aid in the process.
My favorite volunteer project was when I traveled to Haiti. I went for two weeks to help build a school in a village called Mission. We resided in huts with no electricity or bathrooms. It was hard work and to be honest, there were times I just wanted to quit. Fortunately, I survived. After that, I did not just want to be a BuildOn member anymore like everyone else.
A year later, I ran for BuildOn president at my school and won. Being president is great. I enjoy running meetings and speaking in front of many people. I enjoy planning projects and keeping track of everything that goes on. BuildOn lets me improve the organization in my own way.
BuildOn is prodigious for the things it does to help others. It is friendly and welcoming. I consider BuildOn my community and second family.
