The Conversations in My Head by Sierra - September 2014 Scholarship Essay

First, I must say my parents are very spiritual and strict, but not to the extreme. We spend a lot of time at the church house. I have come to the conclusion that the overall message is to have a personal relationship with God. I am sure I will have a better understanding when I am older, as my mother would say.

Growing up I missed out on several things my friends went to and experienced. I did not get to go to any parties outside of school functions. I went to a few basketball and football games and hung out at the mall my fair share of times. However, I did get to go to the movies quite a bit. After a while I found myself okay with not doing what all the other teenagers were doing. Some things I wanted to do to and others I really could care less about participating in.

I consider myself to be a very head strong and calm type of person, but there are still peer pressures that make me vulnerable and compromising. After all, I am just seventeen years old; so how many conversations do I really have among myself when it comes to making decisions.

Being head strong is the most important skill to success in college. No longer is your mother or father there to help you along the way. It is for you to know what is right and what is wrong, what will make you and what will break you. You must be rooted and grounded in the mind. Never forget the real reason you are there, stay focused. Do not let the persuasion of others keep you from getting to where you are going. Things will get rough along and the way and discouragement will come, but never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.
