The Epiphany by Simone - August 2013 Scholarship Essay
Even though the hallways of Greenfield gave off an old bitter smell, there was a vibrant sound of youthful play and laughter flowing out into the hallway. I was eager to start my first day. A teacher is what I thought I wanted to be. I took the role of an assistant teacher of this second grade class, looking forward to enhancing my visions of being a teacher. It was difficult to understand the actions of some of the children, as I would observe them at play, or at study.
Once a boy and girl began to bicker over a golden colored cubby one morning. I observed the argument for a few seconds thinking about a resolution for the two students. I began to wonder why the two kids were arguing over this golden colored cubby. There were plenty more open cubbies of colors other than gold. Later when I got home, I researched the color gold, finding out that it represented value. I then researched every color in the rainbow, finding it exciting. I was not sure if I wanted to teach in a middle school or a secondary school, but being a teacher’s assistant for second graders showed me that working with children could be a learning experience for me also.
In my junior year I found myself lured in by a different enterprise. I participated in a program that enabled students to follow our dreams of providing a product that would benefit people. I had found that I had a craze for running my own clothing line. However in this program I became more interested in helping my colleagues to find ways to advertise their products. I showed them how to contemplate their product’s visual looks, and the advertisements that would be made for their product. This is what I did for the rest of my time in that internship.
Near the end of the internship term my coordinator pulled me to the side and said, “You’re different. You have an ingenious way about yourself, you extract information and think of an out of the box reason, you study the behavior of customers and study when, where, how, and why people would buy or not buy a product. You want to intern or participate in a field of human behavior. That is called…Psychology”.
I experimented with internships in certain fields based on what I wanted to have as a career at those times. I realized that I didn’t want a career in either of my internships. Both internships benefited me, and shaped my understanding of what it was that I wanted to do. But I kept coming back to Psychology. The constant interest throughout my internships was Psychology. I can now intern, and investigate Psychology, and see where it leads me. This has to be not only the most interesting lesson of realizing a factor of myself, but also a life lesson to being open and looking at things sideways other than directly.
