Struggles to Success: My Journey with Attendance by Siraad - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

Walking into class late felt like defeat. During my time in school, I struggled with attendance—not because I didn't care, but because I was being whisked away by family issues. Supporting my dad through his illness meant spending countless hours in the hospital instead of school. I was consumed, unable to manage my time and energy. School began to slip away from my grasp, turning into the last thing I would think about in the morning.
When I saw my grades begin to reflect my circumstances and not my abilities, I decided to take control of what I could. I started planning my mornings with intention, ensuring I could get to school on time. I reached out to my teachers for support catching up. They were very understanding and encouraged me in my journey of self-improvement, helping me stay accountable throughout it all.
There were many days I wanted to go home and give up, but with the support I received, it reminded me of the importance of perseverance. Over time, my attendance and grades improved tremendously. Being in class became an opportunity to grow, personally and academically.
My journey taught me the value of persistence and seeking help through the support systems I am given. I have gained a sense of responsibility and resilience that I know will continue to guide me in the future.
