Creative Education & Impact on Young Artists by Sydnee - January 2025 Scholarship Essay
Being homeschooled from a very young age, I haven’t had the privilege of knowing many of my teachers or instructors throughout my schooling. Pre-recorded videos, faces only known from behind screens; all completely fine in theory, but it wasn’t until I got to college that I realized what I had been missing.
Throughout my first semester at Nossi College of Art, I have had the absolute privilege of three truly incredible instructors, exceptionally skilled in their crafts and teaching. However, it’s Caleigh Bird, instructor in the fine arts, who sits at the forefront.
Ms. Bird is an art school veteran, having taught dozens of classes over a decade of teaching — time and practice that is astoundingly evident in her vibrant, whip-smart presence. Incredibly skilled, encouraging, and a truly kindhearted person, I grew tremendously under her teaching, not only in practical skills, but in my confidence as a creative.
With such small class numbers, she not only put effort into knowing each of us — our lives, artistic styles, and career goals — but fostered an environment where we could grow our friendships with each other, seeing our fellow artists and designers as allies and partners, rather than competition. Even moving past my class with her and this first semester, she remains someone I know I can reach out to for both finely-tuned constructive feedback and a word of encouragement if need be.
Her level of expertise in her craft, efficiency and thoroughness in her teaching, and kindhearted nature towards her students rests at a level I can only aspire to as I move through my life and career. Her teaching and presence has left a significant impact on my work, and I can only hope all students are able to learn from such a knowledgeable light and master of their craft.
