My architecture dream by Tais - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As a junior at Miami Dade College, Kendall Campus, majoring in Architecture, I have had my fair share of challenging academic experiences. One that stands out is the rigorous design studio course I took last year. This course was notorious for its demanding workload and high expectations, and it tested my abilities in ways I had not anticipated.

The challenge began with our first major project: designing a community center that could serve as a cultural hub. The task was to create a space that was not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing and environmentally sustainable. As someone who is passionate about architecture, I was excited about the opportunity to apply what I had learned in my previous courses. However, I soon realized that the project was more complex than I had imagined.

The first hurdle was the sheer volume of research required. I needed to understand the community's needs, local building codes, and sustainable design principles. It was overwhelming at first, and I found myself struggling to manage my time effectively. I spent long nights in the library, poring over books and online resources, trying to gather as much information as possible. Despite my efforts, I felt like I was not making any progress.

To overcome this, I decided to break down the project into smaller, more manageable tasks. I created a detailed timeline with specific goals for each week. This approach helped me focus on one aspect of the project at a time, making the workload feel less daunting. It also allowed me to track my progress and make adjustments as needed.

Another significant challenge was translating my ideas into a coherent design. I had a vision for the community center, but bringing it to life on paper was a different story. My initial sketches were rough and lacked the detail needed to convey my concept effectively. I realized that I needed to improve my drawing skills and learn how to use design software more proficiently.

To address this, I sought help from my professors and peers. I attended extra workshops and spent hours practicing with design software like AutoCAD and SketchUp. I also participated in peer review sessions, where I received valuable feedback on my work. This collaborative environment was incredibly beneficial, as it allowed me to see my project from different perspectives and refine my design accordingly.

Throughout this process, I learned the importance of resilience and adaptability. There were moments when I doubted my abilities and considered giving up, but I reminded myself of why I chose to study architecture in the first place. My passion for designing spaces that can positively impact communities kept me motivated, even when the going got tough.

In addition to improving my technical skills, this experience taught me the value of time management and effective communication. As a Hispanic woman in a field that is still male-dominated, I am determined to overcome any barriers I may face and make a meaningful contribution to the world of architecture. This experience has prepared me to tackle future challenges with confidence and perseverance. I am grateful for the lessons I learned and the support I received from my professors and peers along the way.
