The Challenge of Overcommitment: Balancing Ambition and Assignments by Taja - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
As someone with many interests and a strong ambition for community involvement, I often find myself enthusiastically committing to more responsibilities than I can handle. Whether I’m volunteering for community activities, running for leadership positions in clubs, or engaged in sports or other extracurricular activities, I always feel a sense of purpose when I’m busy and productive. However, this eagerness to excel in all that I do has led to challenges of time management and struggles of meeting deadlines. Particularly when it comes to balancing extracurricular commitments and academic responsibilities.
One moment that truly highlights this obstacle stems back to my high school orientation. After the guided tour of the building where I will finish the last years of my rudimentary education, my mother and I met with an educator that was presenting an opportunity for young writers to be engaged in the community. My mom was immediately excited about this program, as my teachers have always reported positive feedback on my writing skills to her. After hearing the overview of the program, I was eager to sign up and take full advantage of the chance to showcase my writing & sharpen my skills.
As we discussed the expectations and workload of the program, a realization dawned on me. I was faced with the fact that I had already made commitments to the track & field coach, in running for freshman vice president, challenged myself with honors courses, amongst other responsibilities. Taking on another responsibility, no matter how intriguing or beneficial, would only stretch my productive capacity to its limits. This realization was humbling but vital for personal growth. I understood I had to leave some responsibilities behind to effectively cross the bridge that led to the next chapter in my life.
Through moments like this, I’ve learned that success is not about being involved in everything but focusing on what truly matters and aligning commitments with my passions and strengths. Learning to manage my ambitious tendencies is an ongoing process, but this journey has already taught me prioritization, completing one goal at a time, and the importance of being intentional. Now as I prepare for college and pursue my aspirations, I carry these lessons with me, giving myself grace as I conquer the challenge of overcommitment.
