Challenging Academic Experience by TaMyra - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is TaMyra Reed, and I am currently a sophomore in college. Reflecting on my academic journey, one of the most challenging experiences I faced was during my freshman year. Transitioning from high school to college was a big leap, and it came with its own set of hurdles. One of the most significant challenges was adjusting to the increased workload and the level of independence required in managing my studies.
In high school, teachers were more hands-on, guiding us through assignments and often reminding us of deadlines. However, college was a different world. Suddenly, I was responsible for organizing my own schedule, keeping track of multiple assignments, and preparing for exams without constant reminders. This shift was overwhelming, and it took a toll on my academic performance initially.
The first few weeks were particularly tough. I found myself struggling to keep up with the pace of lectures and the volume of reading required for each class. I realized that my high school study habits were not going to cut it in college. I had to find a way to adapt quickly, or I risked falling behind.
To overcome this challenge, I knew I needed to develop better time management skills. I started by creating a detailed planner. Every Sunday, I would sit down and map out my week, noting important deadlines and setting aside specific times for studying each subject. Breaking down my workload into smaller, manageable tasks helped reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed.
Additionally, I sought help from my professors and peers. I realized that I did not have to navigate this new environment alone. I began attending office hours regularly, where I could ask questions and clarify any doubts I had about the course material. Engaging in study groups also proved beneficial. Discussing topics with classmates not only reinforced my understanding but also provided different perspectives on the material, which deepened my learning.
Another strategy that helped me was improving my note-taking skills. In high school, I often relied on textbooks and teacher notes, but college lectures required a more active approach. I started experimenting with different note-taking methods, such as the Cornell method, which helped me organize information more effectively. Reviewing my notes regularly also ensured that I retained the information better.
Balancing academics with personal life was another aspect I had to manage. It was easy to get caught up in the social aspects of college, but I learned the importance of setting boundaries. I prioritized my academics by setting specific times for studying and socializing, ensuring that neither aspect was neglected.
Through these efforts, I gradually found my footing. My grades improved, and I felt more confident in my ability to handle the demands of college. The experience taught me valuable lessons about self-discipline, resilience, and the importance of seeking help when needed.
Looking back, I am grateful for the challenge I faced during my freshman year. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to develop skills that will serve me well throughout my academic and professional life. The strategies I adopted not only helped me overcome my initial struggles but also prepared me for future challenges.
As I continue my college journey, I remain committed to maintaining the habits I developed.
