My First Semester by Yusuf - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My first semester at Rutgers University has been an eye-opening experience, filled with both excitement and challenges. As a freshman majoring in Food Sciences & Technology, I was eager to dive into my courses and learn everything I could about the field. However, one particular class, "Introduction to Chemistry," quickly proved to be more challenging than I had anticipated.

Chemistry was not entirely new to me, as I had taken it in high school. However, college-level chemistry was a different beast altogether. The pace was faster, the content was more complex, and the expectations were significantly higher. I found myself struggling to keep up with the material, especially when it came to understanding the intricate details of chemical reactions and equations. My first exam did not go well, and I realized that my usual study habits were not going to cut it.

Feeling overwhelmed, I knew I had to find a way to overcome this challenge if I wanted to succeed in my major. I started by evaluating my study techniques. In high school, I relied heavily on memorization, which worked for me then but was not effective for college chemistry. I needed to develop a deeper understanding of the concepts. I began by organizing my notes more effectively, summarizing each lecture, and identifying key points and areas where I needed further clarification.

I also sought help from my professor and teaching assistants. This was a big step for me, as I had always been somewhat hesitant to ask for help, fearing it might make me seem less capable. However, I quickly learned that reaching out was a strength, not a weakness. During office hours, I asked specific questions about topics I found confusing, and my professor was more than willing to help me understand them better. The teaching assistants also provided valuable insights and practical tips for tackling complex problems.

Another crucial step was forming a study group with some of my classmates. Working with peers allowed me to gain different perspectives on the material, and explaining concepts to others helped reinforce my own understanding. We would meet several times a week, discussing lecture notes, solving practice problems, and preparing for upcoming exams together. This collaborative approach not only improved my grasp of the subject but also made studying more enjoyable and less isolating.

Additionally, I made use of online resources, such as instructional videos and chemistry forums, which offered alternative explanations and problem-solving techniques. This supplementary material was incredibly helpful, especially when I needed a fresh approach to understand a particularly difficult topic.

Time management also played a crucial role in overcoming this challenge. Balancing my chemistry coursework with other classes and extracurricular activities required careful planning. I created a study schedule that allocated specific times for reviewing chemistry, ensuring that I stayed on top of the material and did not fall behind. This discipline helped reduce my stress levels and allowed me to approach my studies with a clearer mind.

Through these efforts, I gradually improved my performance in chemistry. My grades on subsequent exams reflected my hard work and determination, and I gained confidence in my ability to tackle challenging material. This experience taught me the importance of adaptability, persistence, and seeking support when needed.

Moreover, overcoming this academic challenge has reinforced my passion for Food Sciences & Technology. Chemistry is a fundamental part of understanding food processes and innovations, and mastering it is crucial for my future career. The skills I developed in problem-solving, collaboration, and time management will undoubtedly serve me well throughout my academic journey and beyond.

In conclusion, facing and overcoming the challenge of college-level chemistry has been a pivotal experience in my freshman year at Rutgers University. It taught me valuable lessons about the importance of adapting my study strategies, seeking help, and working collaboratively with others. This experience has not only strengthened my academic skills but also deepened my commitment to my chosen field. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow through this challenge, and I am excited to continue pursuing my passion for Food Sciences & Technology with renewed confidence and determination.
